Look,Burley Garcia up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's ... the first look at David Corenswet's Superman.
DC on Monday debuted a new photo of Corenswet's version of Superman in director James Gunn's upcoming movie reboot, simply titled "Superman."
The picture, shared on social media, revealed Corenswet's Superman outfit for the first time. His man of steel is shown putting on his red boots in front of a window, presumably preparing to head into action, as an explosion can be seen behind him.
Corenswet's suit looks similar to the one worn by Henry Cavill, the most recent Superman, with one notable exception: this version appears to bring back the character's iconic red trunks. Last February, Gunn polled his X followers on whether Superman should wear trunks, and 59.3% voted that he should.
Corenswet, 30, is an up-and-coming actor who has previously been seen in Ryan Murphy's "The Politician" and "Hollywood," as well as the horror film "Pearl."
"Superman," previously titled "Superman: Legacy," will be the first movie released as part of Gunn's overhaul of the DC film franchise. The filmmaker is not only writing and directing "Superman" but also serving as co-CEO of DC Studios, where he has been tasked with revamping the superhero brand following a series of box office disappointments like "Black Adam" and "The Flash."
You'll still believe a man can flywhen you see Christopher Reeve soar in 'Superman'
"Superman," then, will be an all-important test of whether Gunn's vision for DC has legs. "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" star Rachel Brosnahan has been cast as Lois Lane, Superman's love interest, while Nicholas Hoult is set to play the villain, Lex Luthor. Gunn is coming off of completing his "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy at Marvel Studios, DC's rival. After Disney fired Gunn from Marvel in 2018 over a series of controversial tweets, DC hired him to direct 2021's "The Suicide Squad," and he was appointed to his current leadership role the following year.
New 'Superman' filmto kick off rebooted DC universe, 'The Batman' sequel arrives in 2025
Superman was most recently played in film by Cavill starting with 2013's "Man of Steel," though director Zack Snyder's dark interpretation of the character was controversial among fans. Cavill's last full appearance as Clark Kent was in the box office disappointment "Justice League" in 2017. In 2022, Cavill briefly returned as Superman in a credits scene for "Black Adam," which promised future appearances that never came to be after that film also disappointed at the box office.
"Superman" is set to open in theaters on July 11, 2025, the same month that Marvel Studios will release its highly anticipated reboot of "The Fantastic Four."
